Heartbeats 2
by

on
Thursday, March 26, 2015
We had an ultrasound earlier this week and found that she is a normal size, if maybe a little small. Here's a new playlist of the heartbeats:
Kyra mentioned that we didn't have many pictures of her pregnant. Here's one.

We were at the symphony, probably the last one for a long time.
Looking forward to meeting you little one!

One Year Hence

It's been about 1 year since our foster child left our home, returning to the birth family.
I still think about the child every day. I have a picture on my desk. I think of the laughter, the smiles, the hugs. And how the child just fit in with our family so well.
We've lost touch with the family. Phone, address, and email do not work. I asked around for updated contact information, but no one had any.
There's a hole in my heart. I have to avoid thinking about it to stay calm. (This is hard to write.)
We're due with our second child next month, in April. I'm looking forward to seeing our new child. I'm certain I will adore our baby daughter.
There will always be a place in my heart for our foster child, and nothing else can fill it.
If you ever read this: I hope you're okay. Someday, I hope to see you again. And remember, I love you, and I will always be your Baba.

When we first started this journal, it was all about Kyra's pregnancy and our wedding. We wrote about what was going on during that stage of the pregnancy, our wedding, and posted heartbeat recordings from the doctor visits.
Only a few years later, we have a healthy, big school-age kid named Luca, a healthy marriage, and another child on the way. But for this pregnancy, we waited before we announced it. The first time, our journal was sort of a secret. We hadn't shared it with family yet, but we wanted to document what was going on. This time, it was kind of the other way around. Plenty of people knew before we posted it online.
This time, we wanted to make sure to get past a certain stage of the pregnancy before we announced it. We were trying for a baby, and had a few false positives. Even when Kyra was actually pregnant it didn't seem like it. We did so many tests! So we wanted to be certain the baby was going to make it.
A few days ago, we were a bit concerned. Kyra couldn't feel the baby kicking much, and she was told she should feel it every few hours, and quite a few times when she did. So the next day she got a test done, and to our relief, found that the baby was indeed healthy and very active.
Just like with Luca, we record the heartbeats from the ultrasound. Here are the first few recordings we made at various appointments. Yes, she's real! And there's only ONE!
Stay tuned for more!

Back in August, after our trip to Costa Rica, this happened:

Kyra's pregnant!
And we just found out: It's a girl!

She is due in late April, so we've been getting ready and picking out names.
Looking forward to a happy new year already!

Summer of 2013
by
Chris S.
on
Wednesday, October 02, 2013
Wow, it's been a while since we've posted anything. We've been so busy this summer! What have we been doing?
What's coming up?
Stay tuned for photos from all these events!
- Chris completed an online course about machine learning.
- We grilled out in our back yard a lot. At one such party, we played a baseball game with Luca, and I think everyone would agree it was a blast. We're so happy to have our own yard!
- Kyra and Luca took a couple of trips to Minnesota to visit Kyra's Grandma ("Grammy").
- My brother, Kenny, and his wife, Joana, announced they are pregnant!
- We had a trip to Door County. We stayed in a cabin, went to lots of restaurants, hiked a bit, played cards, and all sorts of other things. Our friend Nick set up a treasure hunt for Luca one morning, including a treasure map and all!
- Our marriage turned 5! Kyra got a little older, too... : ) So did our foster child. Parties all around!
- Luca took a trip with friends to see Thomas the Tank Engine. He had a lot of fun, and it was his first weekend on a trip without parents or extended family!
- Luca took T-Ball lessons. He's still taking swimming lessons, too.
- Kyra and Chris, along with one of Kyra's coworkers, went to see Delta Rae live in downtown Madison. It was a great concert!
- Chris's cousin Matt got married, and Luca is still talking about it. It was held at a barn converted into an event hall, and Luca had a lot of fun running around with Chris's young cousins.
- Kyra and Chris went to a Mallards game with Kyra's coworkers. We played cards and we're not sure who won the baseball game.
- Luca attended a birthday party at a pet store. It was fun seeing all the different animals and how excited all the kids were about it. The guide got a gecko out and let it crawl on the kids, including Luca. He wouldn't let the snake near him, though.
- Kyra initiated the "Geeky Cooking Night", where we made all sorts of geeky food, like zombie leg meat (turkey actually), Star Trek tribbles (very tasty), and 1-up mushrooms.
- Marquis, Kyra's dad, got older by some unknown amount, and had a dance party. It was a lot of fun, even with the kids in tow. Luca and Kyra danced for a bit, as well as Chris and Kyra.
- We attended a corn boil for our CSA farm (community supported agriculture). The owners have kids near our age, and it's amazing to see them grow along with our own.
- Luca had another night without parents, when he took a trip to the Twin Cities with Nana. Kyra joined the next day. They had a birthday party and saw Grammy again.
- Kenny and Joana had a baby shower. Unfortunately, one of us was sick that day, so we couldn't make it, but we took them out to dinner a week later.
- We started to do some house fixing projects, including the driveway, plumbing, and insulation. Hopefully we'll be done before we have to turn the heat on full blast!
- Kyra started a training course for foster care that we have to take within 2 years of starting foster care.
What's coming up?
- Luca's birthday is coming up! We're going to have a swim party, so we'll have to figure out something else for all the adults in his life. We'll let everyone know.
- Kenny and Joana are due with their baby anytime now! Looks like another October birthday!
- We have a ton of birthday parties in October... Not sure if we can make it to all of them!
- It's been almost a year since we started foster care.
- We have a Halloween party planned with a formal theme, but in any state of repair. Kyra's going as a zombie, and Chris will be a silent film villain (cape, mustache, and all!).
- Kyra's already planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, with turkey and goose for each, respectively. That should be interesting!
Stay tuned for photos from all these events!

Two Years Online!
by
Chris S.
on
Friday, February 05, 2010
I realized yesterday that our journal has been online for two years! I can't believe it's been two years! In that time, we became engaged, planned a wedding, married (entries by Chris and Kyra), watched our baby grow, gave birth to our son Luca, and watched him grow into an energetic and curious toddler. So much has happened since that first journal entry! The quote Kyra posted in that entry from John Lennon, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans," seems ever relevant.
Kyra, I hope you aren't nearly as frightened nor less excited as you were on that day. We are a family because you are an excellent mother and wife. Thank you.

Luca,
On October 14, 2008, at 12:32 AM, after much anticipation, you arrived. We waited almost two whole weeks. And from your very first moment in space, you were surrounded by new friends, all over the place! Mama and Baba, Auntie Carla, Grandpa Bill, Great-Grandma Tutu, and Aunt Vicki and Uncle John were all waiting to welcome you to your new home.

And then a year went by. We learned a lot as parents, and you learned a lot as a new person. From eating, to playing, to walking about. And your first words! I've been so happy to be with you to share these moments and to be happy with you. It brings me such delight to see you smile and to play with you.

Both Mama and I love to nap with you. You're so warm and cuddly!

Your first apple-picking!

Maybe one day you'll play the piano? You look so proud sitting at the piano all by yourself!

And you had your first steps just a week before your birthday!

We had a party for you with our family and friends last Saturday, and you had another one at your preschool today, too!
I look forward to spending more time with you, playing, laughing, and eventually talking. I'm sure you'll have a lot to talk about. You already do! We have so many hopes for you, and we are already so proud of you. And to paraphrase the book we read to you in utero, Oh, Baby, the Places You'll Go!:
Daddy
P.S. In commemoration of your first birthday, I have dedicated our journal to you. We started it after we found out about you, and it's really for you and our family. I also created a new photo album called "Luca's Photos", since you are almost not a baby any more!

a great place to begin,

you hear in your heart,

It's a scrumptulous world

I'm so glad I could meet you!

My Jeans (and not the DNA type)
by
Kyra S.
on
Tuesday, December 02, 2008
I do not fit into a single pair of my pre-pregnancy pants. Not one. Ok, well technically I can squeeze into two pairs, and one of those I can get buttoned, but I'm afraid to leave them on for more than a minute or the seams might burst. Seriously.
It's not that I'm that big really, it's just that my jeans are that small. I found a size two among my old pants. I think one of my thighs is currently a size two. Bear in mind though that I bought these pants at a time when my jerk of an ex told me, at 120lbs, that I was "a bit chubby" and needed to lose some weight. (Note to all you women: If a guy EVER tells you, point blank, you need to lose some weight, punch him. Then dump him. Women have enough body issues without their significant others butting in.)
However, no matter how small my jeans are, or how many times Chris tells me there is such a concept as buying new pants, I want back into my old ones. Ok, maybe not the size twos, but those are dress pants and don't count. The thing is I worked and shopped long and hard to accumulate my current collection of jeans. It's not large, but they all fit me perfectly and are super comfortable. These are the pants I lived in. That's the only reason I kept them. And when they fit I keep my jeans FOREVER (sophomore year of high school anyone?). And I refuse to go through all that trouble again.
The problem is losing weight during the holidays with a newborn is like... well... losing weight during the holidays with a newborn. Oh well, there's always those new year's resolutions.

Luca’s Story (So Far)
by
Chris S.
on
Friday, November 21, 2008
Here's a version of a story I told Luca tonight:
Mommy and daddy didn't know they were going to have you. Then one day they found out. Daddy thought you might be a girl. Mommy and daddy found a girl name long before they found a boy name. Boy's names are silly, after all.
You grew and grew inside mommy. Mommy got so big! She was so big she almost couldn't fit through a door! We listened to your heartbeat as you got bigger and bigger.
Daddy finally thought of a good name for you. It's hard to pick a baby boy's name!
Then one day we thought you were going to arrive. But you didn't! We were so sad. We thought for sure we would meet you soon. And then every day after we thought you would arrive. But you didn't want to come out!
So one day we went to the hospital to evict you. After all, you weren't paying rent! You were supposed to move out! And you weren't getting any smaller either. Mommy went into surgery, and even then you didn't want to come out. They had to pull you out by your head!
Then daddy saw you for the first time. The doctors cleaned you up, and daddy snipped your umbilical cord. Then you got your first hat.
Daddy held you for a long time after that. We were waiting for mommy. Both of us wanted to see her! You wanted to see her so much you cried and daddy had to shush you!
Then mommy came out, and she was too tired to hold you! So daddy took you to see our family. Then we came back to see mommy, and she held you for the first time.
For a whole week, mommy and daddy were really tired! You kept crying and wanting to eat! You and daddy had "guy time" when you were awake and mommy was sleeping. We would talk, just like right now.
Now you keep growing exponentially! You're so big!

In the Hospital
by
Chris S.
on
Monday, October 13, 2008
10:21 AM
We're in the hospital now, first admitted at about 7:00 am. The midwife decided pitocin was the preferred induction method, and Kyra has been on an intravenous drip since 9:30 or so. She's had more and more contractions, but it's not too fast yet. Keep watching for updates!
11:55 AM
Kyra is having more and more contractions. Everything is going well. We watched Robin Hood: Men in Tights and now we're watching TV. Carla stopped by and then left for an appointment. Otherwise, not much going on!
2:44 PM
It's been a while since I updated this post. The midwife broke Kyra's water around noon. Kyra had a number of very powerful contractions, and we decided to get an epidural. It was quite painful placing it, but now the pain is much more tolerable, and she is able to talk through the contractions (on the phone, too!). Both Kyra and the baby are doing very well now.
4:05 PM
Kyra is now 90% effaced and 5 cm dilated. She's relatively pain-free, and her and the baby are doing well. Here's a picture of Kyra earlier today:

7:28 PM
Kyra is fully dilated! The midwife suggested waiting a few hours before pushing so the baby drops a bit more. Kyra's dad is guessing 10:00 pm. It could be tomorrow, but it will be soon for sure!
2:58 AM
A late, late update. So Kyra pushed like hell for three hours, but he wasn't making it through. The midwife called in the doctor, and she decided it was best to do a c-section. It was a bit of an ordeal, but everyone is okay, and our son is born!

A Letter from Auntie Carla: Dear Baby
by
Chris S.
on
Sunday, October 12, 2008
Auntie Carla wrote a letter to our son on her site:
Dear Baby,
Hello! I thought I would take this opportunity given by your late arrival to write you a little note to welcome you to the world. Think of me as your tour guide. I'll tell you what you need to know. I am your Auntie Carla - technically no relation, but I care about your Mommy and Daddy very much.
It's almost time for your arrival, and I know that your Mommy and Daddy couldn't be more excited! Your bed is all ready, the bathtub is ready and Mommy and Daddy have had their hospital bags packed for weeks! Lots of people have spent a long time waiting for you - and you seem to want to wait even longer! I promise you'll have a great time once you get here!
First you will meet two people who just can't describe how happy they are that you are going to be a part of their lives. To you they are Mommy and Daddy, but to me they are Kyra and Chris. They are two of my very best friends, and I consider them family.
I will let Mommy and Daddy someday tell you the story of how they met, how they started dating, and how they got married, but I want to tell you I know your Mommy and Daddy love each other very much. Individually your parents are both wonderful people - two of the best people on the planet - and so their marriage was a wonderful event to witness. You should have seen your Mommy on her wedding day - she absolutely glowed. Your Daddy stood so proudly waiting for her and you could see exactly how much they love each other.
Your parents are practical people and love to have fun. Mommy and Daddy are already planning your first Halloween and your first Christmas! You have lots to look forward to!
Not only to you have your Mommy and Daddy who love you very much already, but their family and friends can't wait to meet you! Mommy and Daddy love to dance, and have lots of friends from dance who helped throw a baby shower so that Mommy and Daddy can have many books to read to you. You also have some pretty neat grandparents who are very excited! You have aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives who also want to meet you and be a part of your life!
I know everyone who is waiting to meet you hopes you grow up healthy and happy. We want to watch you grow and work towards goals big and small. We can't wait to see what you look like, watch your personality develop, and witness your growth towards adulthood.
This world is an exciting place and I personally can't wait to help you explore it!
Lots of Love,
Auntie Carla

On Birthdays

Today we had an appointment with the midwife again, and finally met the last midwife. (We meet with a midwife from a group of midwives, and the available midwife varies. They communicate with each other about the cases, and each time I'm surprised how much each knows from previous appointments.) We heard the heartbeat again, but I forgot the sound recorder (again).
We discussed what to do next, including what the best option would be for intervening with the pregnancy since it's late. We decided to wait a couple of days, until Monday, and then we will go to the hospital to first manually break Kyra's water to induce labor, then start an intravenous drug, pitocin, a synthetic form of oxytocin, the hormone that facilitates birth.
Inducing labor is important because the placenta can begin to lose its effectiveness, resulting less access to necessary nutrients for the baby and increased risk of complications. So, it is very important to help the birthing process along in order to avoid such problems and to help the family feel secure.
An unanticipated side-effect is that the parents can, within a day or so, chose the child's birthday. Obviously this is usually left up to nature. Don't like the 7th of August, 2009 (that is, 07/08/09)? Or perhaps you do? Or perhaps you like Saturday more than Thursday? Then make your choice--it's up to you!
And then perhaps that's the last time you get to make a decision all on your own. A few people have told us that waiting for the baby is an excellent lesson for being parents--nothing will ever be on our own timetable again. Then again, this is a good lesson for life, as readers of this journal can attest, nothing is certain, and everything changes.
I can't wait for my life to change. I want to be a father, and I want to see my son. I hope he arrives soon!

Husband: "Hey, you do kinda look like a submarine."
Wife: "You think I look like a submarine?!?!?!?"
Husband: "Its just with your skin stretched so tight over your belly..."
Wife: "You think I look like a submarine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're not supposed to say that!!!!!"
Husband: "A pretty submarine?"
The husband better watch what he says before he gets smacked. And overdue pregnant women hit really hard.
